ABOUT US

What is

this all

about?

We are Nerko and Emina, two siblings living in tiny little Bosnia and Herzegovina. Some of you may have heard of it. Maybe you (or your parents) remember some vague news reporting on the war in the 90s.

Emina was 3 when the war broke out. Our sister Nerma was 2 (There is another sister too!). Our family escaped to Germany where we spent 6 years living as refugees. Nerko was born in Germany.

After the war ended, we returned to our homeland, and this has been our home base ever since – leaving only for our trips and to pursue further education.

Maybe it was all the moving in our childhood, but somehow being in the same place doing the same things has never been good enough for us.

Over the years, we’ve developed a passion for exploring new places, be it in our own country or one far away, for two reasons:

FIRST, our best life stories happened while on the road, and

SECOND, travel has a huge impact on personal growth and self-improvement- if you do it right!

After years of traveling to many parts of the world, we decided to use our experience to add value to others. This is why on our blog you will get:

1. IN-DEPTH ADVICE

We spend hours on travel research. We know how frustrating it is if you can’t find the right information online. This is why we will share with you the most important tips and tricks so that you don’t have to lose time over it. If you didn’t find the answers your’re looking for, write to us and we will be happy to help further!

2. INSPIRATION

There are a million ways to explore a destination and you never have time to see it all. To maker your life easier, we will share with you (1) what we did on our trips, (2) if our itinerary made sense, (3) what we loved, and (4) what we regret we did.

3. AMAZING STORIES

We have some hilarious travel stories and it would be a sin to keep them just for ourselves. In fact, from all the trips, what we remember most are the strangers we meet and the crazy things that happen to us. But we’re not talking only about our stories. We will share with you the craziest memories of our readers. If you think you have the next cool story, write to us and we’ll make sure to share it with the world.

Oh, and last but not least, the BONUS:

We will show you the beauty of our home country, Bosnia and Herzegovina. We are always after the roads less traveled and the “are you crazy, you shouldn’t be doing that!” kind of adventures. Bosnia is one of those places. That is why you will love it!

PS. We enjoy travel photography – we are the authors of all the photos on this blog, and Nerko is your guy for funny travel videos (Check out his popular videos here).

How

EMINA

started it

all

Our travel craze started slowly. While Emina was still a law student in Sarajevo, she managed to find ways to travel for education. It was not easy at the time because as a Bosnian citizen, you needed a visa to visit almost anywhere in the world.

Travel was also not a high priority for teens back in the 2000s in Bosnia. The furthest you would go was the Dalmatian coast (in Croatia, our neighbour country).

The concept of a “gap year” (students taking long breaks to travel between high school and University; very common in many western countries) was foreign to us, and we couldn’t understand why someone would take time off to travel the world. What was the point in that? Besides, we didn’t have money for such nonsense.

Plus, any travel other than within the Balkan region or visits to extended family who lived abroad were seen as dangerous and were only to be attempted by travelling with travel agencies, if at all.

In Bosnia, the life cycle is linear: you finish school, get a job (ANY job you can find, if you can find one), get married and then have kids. Game over.

Emina’s escape from this predictable path was through her activism in NGOs and education. She applied for conferences, summer schools, student exchange programs and postgraduate studies. She was 20 years old when she boarded a plane for the first time.

All of this is when her mind started shifting. She met people from all around the world and it only made her want to see and to experience more.

She and our sister Nerma started saving every penny for their first attempt to travel solely for the purpose of visiting a new place (instead of attending a conference, etc.).

What a fail it was! It was 2010, they were too scared to do it on their own so they went to Egypt through a typical package holiday: 12 days, all-inclusive, 5* hotel in the touristy city Hurghada. Fail, fail, fail!

To this day, Emina keeps saying that she hasn’t been to Egypt at all. They spent their time at the hotel pool, overeating and doing a few overpriced side trips. Lesson learned. Never again.

After that, the two of them teamed up with their best friend Amar and did something that seemed super crazy from a Bosnian perspective: they came up with a 3-weeks trip to the Canary Islands in Spain.

They booked their tickets and the hotels online. All on their own!

(I see you there, experienced traveler from a developed western country. You’re thinking to yourself: why is this endeavour considered brave or important? Lucky you for not growing up in the Balkans!)

And that is where it all took off! The three of them came back thrilled and hungry for more. Every following year was all about how to save money for the next trip and how to make it as cheap as possible: China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Morocco, Dubai, France, Italy, Cyprus, India, Cuba…

To this day, travel is what makes Emina feel alive. She works full time as a lawyer now, which leaves little time for seeing the world – but leave it to Emina to ensure that for every single day of holiday leave there is always a trip planned.

Then

NERKO

steps in

the game

Nerko is the youngest kid in the family (You know, the one who gets everything without having to fight for it.).

While Emina and Nerma were experimenting with travel, Nerko was still in high school.

He, too, became active in NGOs from a young age, which enabled him to see many countries in Europe; this included summer schools, conferences, etc. But until graduating from high school, he never traveled alone.

Maaaaan, this was about to change very quickly!

After graduating from high school, Nerko and his friends had the idea to go backpacking through Italy.

But just weeks before the trip, every one of his friends gave up! Excuses like no money, their parents wouldn’t allow them or they were simply too scared. Nerko was doomed.

“You should go alone!” Emina and Nerma encouraged him to be bold and go for it. “I caaan’t do this alone, no waaaay!” was his response. “Yes, you will do this on your own and you will have the best time ever!”

So he went.

He had an extremely (over)detailed 2-week plan that included all accommodations, flights and train tickets – all booked in advance.

One of the hostels turned out to be non-existent so he slept in the park for a few nights, did some couch-surfing (sleeping for free in strangers’ homes) at a very strange old guy’s place, and he almost got robbed one night.

Aaaand he had the time of his life!

The trip brought him to 2 conclusions: (1) from now on, he will travel every year and (2) he will always travel as a solo backpacker.

Nerko made an awesome movie about the backpacking trip to Italy, which became a huge hit in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since then, he’s been on almost every news station in the country! Check it out on our youtube channel

Every year since, his trips have become increasingly extreme: backpacking all over Europe, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore – all of it with lots of couch-surfing, hitchhiking and as cheap as possible.

After Nerko got the Bosnian media’s attention, we decided to start a fan page on Facebook called Nerko’s Travel Adventures (so cheeeeeesy, we know. Obviously, we didn’t spend much time on brainstorming the name).

Through Nerko’s Travel Adventures, we kept everyone in the loop on all the crazy things he was experiencing, like being escorted in an ambulance in Bangkok and hitchhiking in Cambodia.

But after some time, the fan page was not enough to share all the stories, the struggles and the experiences. Plus, Emina wanted to include her adventures as well (not easy if the page is called NERKO‘s Travel Adventures!).

And there you have it: Escape Comfort was born!

Thank you for being here. Since you have made it through this long post, it is obvious that you want to be part of our journey and WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE YOU!

Let us clear some things out

This is not a blog about how to escape from your responsibilities but rather how to escape the comfort of a boring day-to-day life by spicing it up with adventurous, life-changing trips. We have been raised with a strict upbringing, in which our education (and work) have always been a priority over everything else. This is why our travels fit in around school and work – and not the other way around.

Nerko is a dental student (a very good one, actually). He always finishes his exams first and only then does he travel.

Emina is a full-time lawyer, and obviously doesn’t have much time off. But she uses her vacation time effectively. She has (literally) never used holiday leave without having had a trip already planned out.

Sure, Nerko has more time once school is off. He goes on backpacking trips for two or three months. Emina can no longer afford being away from work so much. Unlike in her student days, she now goes on trips of one, two or three weeks max. But in essence, it is not about how long you are gone. It is about what you make with your time. As you will see in our posts, even short weekend getaways will enrich your life significantly.

Now that we sorted everything out, let’s start this journey together!
